Jacob De Arman - Media Creator

I always saw myself as an inventor. Now I get to really bring ideas to life.

Introduction

Starting with animations in the corner of my math book in middle school, I have been making videos and animations, graphics and articles ever since. I'm always learning something new. My latest work is as a motion graphics designer.

Case Study: Motion Design For 6 Part Video Series

Case study
select text, then style

Working for the BYU-Idaho Media Creation team, I was assigned to design the text styles and animations for all the text motion graphics in a six-part video series. The producer annotated the scripts with different text styles (short quote, long quote, word emphasis, etc) and I created animation styles for each of them.

1. Designing the Style
I started by creating a style guide and choosing fonts, colors, and basic animation guidelines for each text style. I used draft footage and created a "Style Guide" photoshop document organized clearly to help the rest of the team apply the animation styles.

I then created a master "Annotated Scripts" photoshop document with all the scripts, text to be animated, and image examples of what each shot could look like. We

2. Drafting the animations

In After-Effects, I tested various animation styles for each text style and ran them by the director for approval. These approved styles became templates for the real animations.

3. Creating Assets

Because the fonts where proprietary and we needed an editable, scalable asset, I created a duplicate of the source document in After-Effects with similar fonts, and adjusted everything until it looked almost identical, but stylized to fit the videos.

4. Animating the shots

Using the initial style tests, I duplicated the appropriate template and made a new composition for each animation. I used the raw footage to time the animation shots with the host's voice and matched the text with camera still from the appropriate shot angle.

The video above is a mix of some of the animations I created. Please notice the consistent fonts, colors, textures, and motion styles, but also the variety in the animations to keep the viewers attention for different shots.

Filmmaking

Short films and music videos, cut in DaVinci Resolve and the Adobe Suite — plus a credit on the feature film Notes For Tomorrow (on IMDB).

The Halloween Special

I produced this film using the characters and set from a previous series for a horticulture class. I wrote the script, planned the film schedule, chose team members for director, gaffer, sound, and camera roles, and saw the project to completion in time for a team Halloween party.

The Gift

As producer of this senior project film, I secured casting, locations, and schedule for every stage of production, working closely with the director and cinematographer to get every shot for a successful story.

Rescue

A music video I directed for the song "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle. Before I had ever made a video with a real camera or editing program, I was walking alone, reflecting on the difficulties of family drama and how we all need someone to see us in our trials, and I thought of this video idea. This was my second attempt at the same video. It's not perfect, but it was a good experience in the production process.
